Daycare early drop-off, explained.

Daycare opening hours can decide whether a job offer is workable. A 7:30 AM opening is too late for nurses, EMTs, transit operators, early-shift retail managers, and commuting parents in big metros. Early drop-off, sometimes called extended care or before-care, is the patch most centers offer — with a fee, a separate room, and a different staff team.

What "early drop-off" usually means

Most US daycares open between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. The earliest opens at 5:30 AM, and a small set of round-the-clock programs in healthcare-heavy metros open earlier still. The "early drop-off" label is used in two ways:

  • An extended hour before the regular day. The center actually opens earlier — sometimes 6 AM, sometimes 6:30 AM — usually with one staffed combined room until classrooms open at 7:30 AM.
  • A formal program slot. An add-on to your enrollment that grants access to that earlier window, often with a per-day or per-month surcharge.

What the early room actually looks like

Most centers staff one or two "early" rooms before the rest of the building opens. The setup typically has:

  • Mixed-age care for the first hour. Children from infant through preschool rooms share space until classrooms open. The rationale is staffing: an infant teacher is not on-site yet, so the toddler-and-preschool team supervises the few infants who arrive early.
  • Quiet activities. Books, puzzles, light building toys. Most centers avoid loud or messy projects during early hours so children can re-settle.
  • Breakfast service. Many centers offer breakfast between 7 and 8 AM. See our meal policy guide.
  • A move to home rooms. Children are walked to their assigned classroom as that teacher arrives.

Some parents prefer the early room because it is calmer than the 8 to 9 AM main-drop-off rush. Others avoid it because the mixed-age grouping is not the social setting they want first thing in the day. Both views are reasonable.

What it costs

Pricing varies a lot. Three structures dominate:

  • Per-day surcharge: $10 to $25 added to your bill for every day you use early drop-off.
  • Monthly add-on: $80 to $200 per month for unlimited use of the early window.
  • No surcharge: Included in tuition. Common at higher-priced urban programs that already price the early hour into the base rate.

Licensing and ratios during early hours

State licensing applies as soon as the first child is in the building. Ratios must be met at all times, including the early hour when classrooms are combined. Most states require a second adult on premises before any child can be present, even if only one child has arrived. This is why most centers do not open earlier than 5:30 to 6 AM — two-staff-minimum makes earlier hours uneconomical.

For full state-by-state context, see our ratios by state reference.

Screen creep

Early drop-off is one of the windows where screens are most likely to appear. A wall-mounted television in the lobby running a kids' channel from 6 to 7 AM is not uncommon. If screen-time matters to your family, ask explicitly about the early hour and pair the answer with our daycare screen-time policy guide.

Questions to ask before signing

  • What is your earliest drop-off time?
  • Is there a surcharge, and how is it billed?
  • Where will my child be during the early hour, and who is the staff person?
  • Will my child be combined with other ages, and for how long?
  • What is your screen-time policy in the early room?
  • What is the latest pickup time, and is there a similar late-care fee? (See our pickup and drop-off tips.)

If your job changes

Working hours change. So do daycare needs. If your shift moves earlier or later mid-year, ask the director about adding or removing the early add-on with one month's notice. Most centers can flex; a few require a full enrollment-cycle wait.

For families navigating major schedule changes — new job, return from leave, return-to-office mandate — see our back to work after baby and employer childcare benefits guides.

One honest editorial note: early drop-off has gotten harder, not easier, since the 2024 return-to-office push. Many centers have shortened their early hours because of staffing pressure. If your shift starts at 7 AM and your commute is 25 minutes, do not assume the daycare across the street can match. Ask before you sign a lease, accept a job, or commit to enrollment.

Bottom line

Early drop-off solves a real problem for many families but costs extra and looks different from the regular day. Confirm the opening time, the staff, the room, the fee, and the screen-time policy before you enroll, and revisit the question any time your work schedule shifts.
